The Australian Government has confirmed a new investigation has been launched into Viagra sales in the state.
The move follows a by the Health Ministry that it is reviewing the price of erectile dysfunction drugs including Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
The new report, released today by the Health Ministry’s Office of Drugs and Therapeutic Products (OTOM), has revealed that sales of the erectile dysfunction drugs have been suspended.
The drug sales have been in place for more than four years.
The new study was led by Prof Andy Campbell, Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney, and the Australian Research Council’s Centre for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The drug companies will not be allowed to withdraw their medicines. A spokesman for Pfizer, which makes Viagra, said the suspended drug sales had been “very modest” and that the firm had not increased the price of its own drugs.
Dr Campbell said Viagra, Cialis and Levitra had been introduced to the market in Australia for a variety of reasons.
He said the drugs had been sold on the internet and on print-and-abuse sites and some pharmacies had been selling them on the Internet.
He said erectile dysfunction drugs sold on the internet could have dangerous side-effects and that the drugs could increase heart attacks and stroke.
The drugs are a class of drugs called PDE-5 inhibitors.
The researchers also identified an increased risk of stroke, heart attacks and liver problems with these drugs.
They concluded that erectile dysfunction drugs had been available for sale in Australia over a long period of time.
A spokesman for Pfizer, which makes Viagra, said the firm had not increased the price of its own drugs.
Pfizer’s spokesman said erectile dysfunction drugs were “often sold in Australia for erectile dysfunction, and there have been reports of men who have had erectile dysfunction in the last few years”. He said the drugs were only available from private, wholesalers.
He said Pfizer had not increased the price of its own drugs.
“We were also reviewing the pricing of these drugs and our findings showed the drugs were more expensive than the prices we had been paying for them,” he said.
The researchers noted that the drugs had been sold on the internet and on print-and-abuse sites and some pharmacies had been selling them on the Internet.
Pfizer’s spokesman, Dr Mike Deats, said the drugs had been available on the internet in Australia for a variety of reasons.
He said the drugs were available to anyone over the age of 18 and no children.

Dr Campbell said Pfizer’s website was based in the USA and was operated by a different company.He said the website was selling to men who have not been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction.
“We are reviewing the pricing of this drug and there are a number of potential side-effects that men can expect to have,” he said.
Dr Campbell said Viagra, Cialis and Levitra had been widely available to men in Australia since the first erectile dysfunction drug was introduced.He said Viagra, Cialis and Levitra were all approved in Australia for this purpose.
Dr Deats said that the drugs had been available in Australia for a variety of reasons.
Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

A New South Wales man who was arrested on charges of causing bodily harm has been jailed.
The former pharmacist was jailed for four years on suspicion of committing a serious criminal offence and was given one year of supervised release after being sentenced by court.
The court heard Mr Gomes had been at his pharmacy in Cumbria for a number of months before being stopped by police in the early hours of Tuesday.
